Alternative Sources of Credit

Advanced Standing Credit

Bentley awards credit for some course-based examinations taken prior to college enrollment (e.g., Advanced Placement). Students may receive a maximum of 30 credits through alternative sources of credit. Advanced Placement examination score reports and International Baccalaureate diplomas must be sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admission from the testing agency. Additional information on advanced standing credit may be found on the Office of Undergraduate Admission website.

Directed Study

Qualified students may, under the guidance of a faculty member, undertake directed study to conduct an in-depth investigation or analysis of a specialized topic for academic credit. To be eligible, students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, or a 3.3 GPA for the previous two semesters, or a 3.3 GPA in at least 12 credit hours within the curriculum area in which the directed study will be done.

Interested students should obtain an Application for Directed Study from the Registrar’s Office form site prior to the applicable term of study. A written proposal, completed application, and transcript should be submitted to the appropriate faculty member. Upon faculty approval, the materials are forwarded for approval to the department chairperson and the Associate Dean of Business or Arts & Sciences, depending on the department in which the study will be done. Students may not take more than two directed study courses in a given semester. Further, a student may not enroll in more than one directed study in a single department. Typically, directed study courses are applied to a student's degree as elective credit; however, exceptions may be made for a directed study course to satisfy a major requirement with approval from the applicable department chair.

Tutorials

Tutorials enable students to complete a regular course when it is not offered in the university’s schedule. All academic regulations apply to tutorials and students register under the course’s regular catalog number. To initiate a tutorial, students must have a special need for the proposed course; for example, the course is needed to not delay a student's degree progression or completion. Students must obtain approval from the faculty member, department chairperson, and the corresponding Associate Dean (Arts & Sciences or Business) prior to the start of the applicable semester in which the tutorial will be held. The Application for Tutorial form is available on the Registrar’s Office forms site
